Revitalize, Redevelop and Renew-Camp Springs

Camp Springs needs revitalization

Camp Springs Community Center and Skate Park-Over the last 10 years the population in Camp Springs has grown and we see its impact in various ways. However, the capacity to support and provide recreational space for the community has not grown with the population. The Temple Hills Recreation Center has a very small foot print and cannot support both the Temple Hills and Camp Springs communities. Camp Springs needs a Community Center with facilities similar to Harmony Hall in Ft. Washington. Ideal locations include areas along the Allentown Road corridor or one of the numerous abandoned or foreclosed commercial properties in Camp Springs.

Organic Market or a Local Farmers Market-A key to a sustainable community is healthy eating. A key to economic development for Camp Springs is innovation; it appears that both need to intersect at the right place to net benefits for the community and spur development in this area. Making affordable, locally-grown organic food more available should be a top priority of every local government. Expanding local organic food production [and consumption] stimulates the economy, improves public health and protects the environment. --Organic Consumers Association

Camp Springs strives to be a ‘green’ community -The proposed developments in Camps Springs such as the Arts & Entertainment District and the Defense & Technology corridor slated for Allentown Road, as well as future residential developments should incorporate clean and renewable energy solutions, such as geothermal, solar, fuel cells and water reuse technologies. The green movement is afoot, and we need to embrace it and take advantage of viable opportunities that make sense for our community. Solutions such as solar roof top networks, which is one of the most cost effective and fastest ways to reap green benefits for businesses and home owners, should be considered.

Political support for the Arts & Entertainment District/Town Center West /Transit Oriented Development and Smart Growth Initiatives-The Arts & Entertainment District or Town Center West concepts have been on the books for a long time and no movement has been made. The reality is that there needs to be a lot more pushing by the community and Camp Springs needs a political champion for this concept. During this election season we should have a bevy of candidates jockeying for the position of champion; especially for this project.

When it comes to commercial development and prime locations, there is no reason the Branch Avenue Metro Station should not be the hub of development in Camp Springs. If our leaders get it right, the spokes from that hub should touch virtually every other part of Camp Springs.
